South African Callanetics

CLUB RHYTHM INTRODUCES SOUTH AFRICAN CALLANETICS

.. an exercise class that creates stronger, leaner bodies through science!

If you thought the only way to a trim, taut body was through a high-impact, cardio-based, ‘can’t move the next day’ exercise regime - take heart! From December 12, Club Rhythm will be offering classes in South African Callanetics - a science-based non-impact fitness solution.

Blending principles of yoga, Pilates and ballet - South African Callanetics is about creating leanness and strength without bulky muscle build-up, better posture, improved flexibility and a stronger pelvic floor.

Callanetics was created in the 1980s by American ballet dancer Callan Pinckney. She was born with spinal curvatures and devised specific exercise techniques to help alleviate her back and knee pain. Her program became hugely popular throughout the US and the UK.

South African Callanetics is a more highly developed version of the original program. It was established during the ‘90s by exercise specialists, with input from European movement expert, Dr Christian Larsen. Larsen created Spiraldynamik® - a three-dimensional concept of movement based on an anatomical understanding of how the human body works and that spirally formed bones, joints and muscle structures underpin all mobile activity. In adapting the original program to Larsen’s concept, South African Callanetics became a more anatomically correct exercise regime - placing emphasis on spiral rotations and strengthening the pelvic floor.

A South African Callanetics class involves a series of isometric exercises with names like ‘twisty legs’, ‘saddlebag attacker’ & ‘waist whittler’. Each incorporates a very small and precise natural spiral movement - or pulse.

Club Rhythm’s South African Callanetics classes will be presented by Marayka Kruijswijk - currently SA’s only qualified instructor in this exercise style. While equally beneficial to women of any age, Marayka's focus on exercising the pelvic floor muscle is what makes the program so appealing to those aiming to re-gain their strength after pregnancy or when experiencing hormone changes during and after menopause. The pelvic floor exercises in South African Callanetics can help minimise that risk, as well as lift and shape buttocks and provide core strength to reduce hip and lower back pain.
